Clemson senior shortstop Khalil Greene earned the Hitter
of the Week award, while Texas junior lefthander Brad Halsey
took the Pitcher of the Week honors. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates
from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each
Tuesday throughout the season.
Greene led Clemson with a .727 average (16-for-22), six home
runs, two doubles and seven RBI over five games. He also scored
nine runs, walked three times and improved his current hitting streak
to 12 games. The Key West, Fla., native registered multiple hits
in every game along with tying a school record by homering in five
straight games. In addition to his performance at the plate, Greene
was successful in three of four stolen base attempts.
Halsey threw a 13-strikeout, two-hitter on unfriendly ground
in Columbia, Mo., as the Longhorns shut out the Missouri Tigers.
It was the first complete game shutout by a Texas pitcher since
Justin Simmons on Apr. 15, 2001, against Mizzou. Halsey allowed
just two singles and tied the UT game high for strikeouts in 2002
along with Ray Clark, who fanned 13 vs. Winthrop on March 5 at Austin.
Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of
college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and
publicists of the sport. For more information about the NCBWA, visit
